Celebrity Face Ratios, Measured by AI

BTS's JIMIN, Cha Eun-woo, Song Hye-kyo, Tom Cruise and more — measured with the same AI analyzer you can run on your own photo. The results say a lot about beauty standards.

The measurements

Eight famous faces, one method: AI landmark detection on public front-facing photos.

Bar chart of celebrity face length-to-width ratios compared with the golden ratio 1.618

We ran the same AI analyzer you can use on this site over public, front-facing photos of well-known Korean and Hollywood stars. The analyzer measures length from the top of the detected face outline (mid-forehead) to the chin and width across the cheekbones, calibrated on average iris size — so the numbers run lower than hairline-to-chin tape measurements. The full measurements — including estimated face length, width, and area — are in the benchmark table on our home page. The chart above shows the number everyone asks about: the length-to-width ratio.

What jumps out of the data

Nobody is anywhere near 1.618. The entire group — including faces routinely called "perfect" in entertainment media — sits between 1.11 and 1.28, far below the Golden Ratio that beauty marketing loves to cite. If Phi were really the standard, every one of these stars would fail it. (More on that in our Golden Ratio guide.)

The spread is wide, and it doesn't rank them. Cha Eun-woo (1.23) is often called "facial genius" in K-media, yet JIMIN measures a much rounder 1.15 and Kim Soo-hyun a longer 1.28 — and all three are considered top-tier. Within this range, the ratio describes character, not quality: lower ratios read softer and younger, higher ratios read more sculpted.

Size and ratio are different things. Don Lee's famous "big face" is mostly about width and area (16.6 cm wide, ~415 cm² by our 3D estimate) rather than an unusual ratio — his 1.11 isn't far from JIMIN's. It's a good reminder that a single number never captures a face.

How to compare yourself (without spiraling)

Run the analyzer on a front-facing photo taken at eye level, then find where you land on the chart. Measured the same way, most people fall between about 1.05 and 1.35 — squarely inside the same band as this celebrity list. Landing near a particular star doesn't mean you look like them (features, skin, and expression dominate); it means your proportions behave similarly, so styling that works for them is worth trying on yourself.

Use your number as a styling input, not a score: lower ratios benefit from height and vertical lines, higher ratios from width and softness — the full playbook is in our styling guide. And if your takeaway is "my face is bigger than theirs," read making your face look smaller — the levers are surprisingly effective, and none of them involve changing your face.

FAQ

In our sample, Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) has the lowest length-to-width ratio at 1.11 — his face is nearly as wide as it is long. The smallest face by area is a different measurement: Tom Cruise (245.9 cm²) and Go Youn-jung (253.8 cm²) measure smallest in our data.

None in our sample — and studies measuring attractive faces generally find the same. Measured consistently with our method, admired faces cluster between roughly 1.05 and 1.35. See our Golden Ratio guide for why the 1.618 claim doesn't hold up.

They're estimates from single public photos using AI landmark detection, calibrated on average iris size. Angle, lens distortion, and hairline visibility shift results by a few percent — treat them as good approximations, not clinical data.
